► (1874-1945) Filósofo alemán de la escuela neokantiana. Estudió las formas de expresión del espíritu en el lenguaje, el mito, la religión y la ciencia. Destaca su obra Kant, vida y doctrina (1918).

Filósofo y educador alemán. Enseñó en las universidades de Berlín (1905–19) y de Hamburgo (1919–33) antes que el surgimiento del nazismo lo forzara a emigrar a Suiza y luego a EE.UU. La filosofía de Cassirer, basada principalmente en la obra de Immanuel Kant, amplió las doctrinas de este filósofo en lo que respecta a la manera en que la experiencia humana está estructurada por conceptos innatos. Después de estudiar varias formas de expresión cultural, Cassirer concluyó que el hombre está caracterizado únicamente por su capacidad de utilizar las "formas simbólicas del mito, la lengua, y la ciencia para estructurar su experiencia y, con ello, entenderse a sí mismo y entender el mundo natural. Su obra original más importante es Filosofía de las formas simbólicas (1923–29); también escribió sobre Kant, Gottfried Leibniz, cosmología del Renacimiento y los platonistas de Cambridge.
